Asynchronous Communication Protocols

Writing is thinking. By forcing communication into written form, you elevate the quality of the thought and decouple the transmission of information from the receipt of information.

The RFC Model

Request for Comments (RFCs) originated in internet protocols but are the gold standard for async engineering. Before writing code, write a document detailing the problem, proposed solution, and alternatives. Circulate it. Let teams review it in their own timezone.

Status Updates

The daily standup is a crutch. Replace it with a script that prompts engineers for three bullet points daily in a dedicated Slack channel.
